Outer tie rod end engineered for direct-fit replacement on 1978–1995 Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, Oldsmobile and Pontiac models. This outer right/left hand tie rod end secures the steering linkage to the steering knuckle, maintaining correct toe alignment and steering responsiveness. Built for durability and reliable steering performance, it resists wear and corrosion while providing smooth ball-and-socket articulation. Ideal for routine maintenance or restoration projects, the part restores factory steering geometry and reduces vibration, uneven tire wear, and play in the steering system. Designed for straightforward installation with common hand tools, it offers a dependable, long-lasting solution for worn or damaged outer tie rod ends.
Features:
- Fitment: Direct-fit outer tie rod end for 1978–1995 Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, Oldsmobile and Pontiac models (right/left hand)
- Material: Heavy-duty steel ball stud with hardened taper and corrosion-resistant finish
- Function: Secures steering linkage to the steering knuckle and provides precise ball-and-socket steering articulation
- Application: OEM-style replacement for restoring steering alignment, reducing play and uneven tire wear
- Durability: Sealed joint design with greaseable or pre-lubed option to extend service life and resist contaminants
- Ease of use: Straightforward installation with common tools; no specialized press required for most applications
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 30-90 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Park vehicle on level ground, engage parking brake and place wheel chocks at rear wheels.
- Loosen lug nuts on the front wheel, lift the vehicle with a jack and support with jack stands. Remove the wheel.
- Mark the position of the old outer tie rod on the inner tie rod or count exposed threads to preserve alignment reference.
- Loosen the jam nut at the inner tie rod end and back it off enough to allow removal of the outer tie rod.
- Remove the cotter pin (if present) and loosen the castellated nut at the outer tie rod stud but do not fully remove.
- Use a tie rod separator or carefully strike the steering knuckle near the stud with a hammer to dislodge the tapered stud from the knuckle, then remove the nut and pull the outer tie rod free.
- Unscrew the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod the number of turns recorded or aligned to match the old part, and remove the old unit.
- Thread the new outer tie rod onto the inner tie rod to the same reference point or thread count. Tighten the jam nut against the outer tie rod (if applicable) to secure position.
- Insert the new stud into the steering knuckle, install and torque the nut to factory specification, and secure with a new cotter pin if required.
- If the part is greaseable, apply grease through the zerk fitting until the boot slightly expands. Reinstall the wheel and torque lug nuts to spec.
- Lower the vehicle, perform a preliminary steering check, and have a professional wheel alignment performed to ensure correct toe and steering geometry.
