Front upper ball joint designed for 1964–1974 Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, Oldsmobile and Pontiac models. This replacement ball joint secures the upper control arm to the steering knuckle, maintaining proper wheel alignment and smooth suspension articulation. Built for durability and reliable steering response, it’s ideal for classic car restorations, routine maintenance, or rebuilding worn front suspension components. Easy to install with basic mechanical skills, it restores factory handling and reduces play and vibration in the front end.

Suggested Tools:
  • Floor jack and jack stands
  • Socket and ratchet set
  • Wrenches
  • Ball joint press or C-clamp with adapters
  • Hammer and punch
  • Torque wrench
  • Pry bar
  • Needle-nose pliers (for cotter pin removal)
  • Penetrating oil
Instructions:
  1. Park on a level surface, set parking brake and loosen lug nuts on the front wheel.
  2. Raise the vehicle with a floor jack and securely support it on jack stands. Remove the wheel.
  3. Remove the cotter pin and castle nut from the upper ball joint stud. Separate the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle using a ball joint separator or pickle fork.
  4. Support the control arm with a jack or stand to relieve tension from the ball joint.
  5. If applicable, remove any retaining clips or snap rings securing the ball joint to the control arm.
  6. Use a ball joint press (or equivalent C-clamp adapter) to press out the old ball joint from the control arm housing. Apply penetrating oil if the joint is stubborn.
  7. Clean the control arm bore and inspect for wear or damage. Replace the control arm if the bore is out of specification.
  8. Press the new ball joint into the control arm until fully seated, ensuring correct orientation for left/right hand application.
  9. Reattach the ball joint stud to the steering knuckle and tighten the castle nut to the manufacturer’s specified torque.
  10. Install a new cotter pin, bend to secure, and re-fit any retaining clips or grease fittings as required.
  11. Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque the lug nuts to specification.
  12. Perform a wheel alignment after installation to ensure proper handling and prevent uneven tire wear.
