Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 45-90 minutes per side
Instructions:
- Park on level ground, chock rear wheels, loosen front wheel lug nuts, then lift the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands.
- Remove the front wheel to access the steering linkage.
- Apply penetrating oil to the tie rod end fasteners and allow to soak if necessary.
- Loosen the jam nut on the outer tie rod and unthread the outer tie rod from the inner to free the assembly (count turns or measure exposed thread for alignment reference).
- Separate the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle using a tie rod puller or pickle fork, then remove the outer tie rod from the inner assembly.
- Remove the retaining fastener(s) securing the inner tie rod end to the steering rack or center link, and unthread or extract the inner tie rod from its mounting by hand or with an appropriate tool.
- Prepare the new inner tie rod by inspecting seal and threads; apply grease if specified by the part instructions.
- Install the new inner tie rod by threading it into the rack or center link to the same approximate length/position as the original, then torque mounting fasteners to factory specifications.
- Reassemble the outer tie rod to the new inner using the previously noted thread count for alignment; tighten the jam nut and torque to spec.
- Reconnect the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle and tighten the castle nut or retaining fastener to the manufacturer's torque specification; install a new cotter pin if required.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque the wheel lug nuts to spec.
- Have a professional wheel alignment performed to ensure proper steering geometry and tire wear after replacement.
