Horn relay designed to adapt the original horn circuit when converting a 1959-1960 Chevrolet El Camino from generator to alternator electrical systems. The relay routes horn current through a dedicated, fused 12V feed so the horn switch carries only a low-control current, protecting original wiring and switches while ensuring consistent horn performance. Built for restoration and replacement applications, it offers robust terminals, corrosion-resistant housing, and a straightforward wiring footprint for reliable, long-term operation.
Features:
  • Fits 1959-1960 Chevrolet El Camino.
  • Provides a dedicated relay output for horn operation after alternator conversion.
  • Reduces load on factory horn switch and wiring to prevent overheating and failure.
  • Durable, corrosion-resistant housing and heavy-gauge terminals for reliable connections.
  • Simple wiring interface for easy installation during restorations or electrical upgrades.
Installation / Application:
  • Difficulty: 2/5
  • Estimated time: 30-60 minutes
Suggested Tools:
  • Socket set or wrenches
  • Screwdrivers
  • Wire strippers and crimpers
  • Ring terminals and butt connectors
  • Inline fuse and fuse holder (10–20A)
  • Multimeter or test light
  • Heat-shrink tubing or electrical tape
  • Zip ties
  • Drill and mounting hardware (optional)
Instructions:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable before beginning work.
  2. Locate the horn switch lead (usually the wire going to the horn from the steering column) and the horn(s) themselves; label wires if needed.
  3. Mount the relay in a dry, secure location near the firewall or inner fender using existing holes or a small screw/bolt.
  4. Identify relay terminals: 30 (fused 12V input), 85 (ground), 86 (trigger from horn switch), 87 (switched output to horn).
  5. Run a fused 12V feed from an ignition-switched source to relay terminal 30. Use an inline fuse (10–20A) close to the battery or power source.
  6. Connect the horn switch lead to relay terminal 86. If the original horn lead was grounded on button press, confirm polarity with a multimeter.
  7. Connect relay terminal 87 to the horn’s positive lead (or to the harness feeding the horn).
  8. Secure relay terminal 85 to a good chassis ground or the vehicle ground point.
  9. Re-check all connections for tightness and proper insulation; use heat-shrink or tape on splices and secure wiring with zip ties.
  10. Reconnect the battery and test horn operation with the ignition on. Verify that the horn only sounds when the switch is pressed and that the inline fuse remains intact.
  11. If the horn does not operate, re-check wiring and fuses and confirm proper trigger voltage at terminal 86 with a multimeter.
